Quick IRC Info

What is IRC?

IRC Stands for Internet Relay Chat. It is an open protocol that has been around for well over 15 years, and is used by many different groups of people.

It's main purpose is for group discussions, although it can also be used to talk to a single other person, to transfer files, and many other varied uses.

To use IRC, you must have an IRC Client (mIRC). Once installed, users connect to one of many "servers" where they can then join any number of "channels" (think: chat rooms). Most servers will have several different hosts linked together that you can connect to, each containing the same channels and users.

Why should I use IRC?

  • It increases communication between our admins and players.
  • It allows faster contact to admins than posting in our forums.
  • It allows you to keep in contact with our fellow players and regulars.
  • Possible chance to obtain a slot on the servers if they are crowded.
  • Shows your support for Roadkill Cafe, and can help you get to know people quicker.
  • Makes the server look good by having lots of people supporting it and idling the channel!
  • IRC takes up virtually no computer usage and bandwidth, so leaving it on will not affect you playing CS or browsing the internet!

How do I install IRC?

This assumes you are using a Windows based PC. If you are not, please use google and search for IRC Clients - Most web pages will have documentation on how to use them - for your particular OS.

To install IRC, we will be downloading vanilla (plain) mIRC. To do this, simply go to the mIRC website and pick a link to download the client from.

    Now follow the steps ahead:
  1. Install mIRC wherever you want, with all the default settings.
  2. When it's finished installing, Check the "Launch mIRC" button.
  3. If any advertisement box for mIRC donations pops up you can 'X' out of it, or click cancel or whatever. Then you are taken to the "mIRC Options" box (which can be opened by pressing Tools > Options any other time).
  4. Enter anything under Full name and Email, it doesn't have to be real. Fill in a Nick (and an Alternate nick in case someone has chosen the Nick you would like already).
  5. Click the Red/Yellow Star next to "Connect To Server" button.
  6. On the Drop Down menu for IRC Server (it more than likely says dalnet now), choose any GameSurge server. Click Connect To Server.
  7. Once you are connected to the IRC Server, the "mIRC Favorites" folder will pop up. Type in #roadkillcafe, then press "Join" and you'll be chatting with us!
For more advanced users:
I highly recommend using nnScript. It is an addon that will give you many more functions than "vanilla" mIRC and is much prettier, with many themes/skins available. Visit the nnscript website for links to the download and instructions. MAKE SURE THE NNSCRIPT VERSION IS FOR YOUR VERSION OF MIRC!

Once installed and configured to your liking, simply connect to gamesurge and then join #roadkillcafe

How do I use mIRC?

mIRC looks like a very complicated program, but it's most useful features are quite easy to use, and it's more complex features are accessible to anyone who knows how to use the built in Help system (Help>Contents or Search to start).
There are 2 major things to know about mIRC:
  1. The first and most important thing to mention is that mIRC takes up virtually no processing power, as it is nearly 15 years old. Thus leaving it on all day will NOT slow your computer down in any way.
  2. The next thing to know is that mIRC does not use enough bandwidth to slow any internet connection down apart from dialup users.
Because of this, I recommend that you idle with us in mIRC - That is, leave it on whenever your computer is on! There's no reason to turn it off unless your computer is going off! This promotes ease of communication and community togetherness.

Once you are connected, the easiest way to get help is simply to talk to us in the channel. IRC does not make any noises for us (by default, though it can be set up to), so occasionally it will take several minutes for us to respond. Stay a while. Don't come in, ask for someone, and leave. :(

For certain channels you have to be authenticated. The "fail code" that will pop up is Cannot Join Channel (+r). This means you aren't authenticated with AuthServ. To fix this, make sure you are authenticated, also check the server window to make sure you don't need a new auth cookie.

If you want to learn more on your own, simply google "mIRC tutorials" or stop by this IRC Help site.
